Hamlet: the Ghost secne

In all three movies we have watched, I feel some of the characters that have portrayed Hamlet in a way that it comes out very well. Manly in all the versions the scenes were dark and ominous. In the second version (Kenneth Branagh), Hamlet who is played by Branagh himself uses more fear then other emotions then sadness to express the scene. I felt that the special effect was a little too dramatic, with the ground braking and the fog and the music wasn’t bad it added suspense. Even when the king talked, I could barley understand him; he was just to anger for me. But I like the way the Director used the flashback to show the audience a little visual background.   In the 1st version (Franco Zeffirelli) Mel Gibson plays Hamlet. In this film I like how they portray him differently than in the Branagh version Hamlet is more angered by his father’s then sadden, but in the Ghost scene there aren’t any special effects but the emotion says a lot because in the book I see Old Hamlets ghost more of a sad man but with some anger in him. In this one you can understand him better. In the 3rd version (Michael Almereyda) I like the way they used props like the T.V channel because it foreshadowed what was going to happen and the handkerchief was for the poison. But the lighting was too bright.

In my image I would have had Hamlet going to look for his father and I would show the emotion needed in each part. I would use flashbacks to give a better meaning and foreshadowing like in the 3rd version. Toward the end I’ll add Hamlet being angry toward his uncle and mother. I want the audience to know where his feelings are coming from.

  1. I agree with you about your thoughts on the second version of Hamlet. I also agree with your thoughts on the third version of Hamlet. I understand your interpretation of the ghost scene.
