In the First "To be or not to be" speech by Olivier's Hamlet it was good but the thing i dislike the most is the use of the music i thought it was a little to dramatic for the scene but did add an effect on how Hamlet felt on some things he was thinking about. The setting added an effect to the scene ,
where he was on the top of the castle looking down at the rapid waves. In one part of the speech it says, " Or to take arms against a sea of troubles". So showing the waves hitting the rocks at the bottom, to me it represented the rocks as people fighting against the waves (their troubles). He also showed a dagger when he said " the bare bodkin" it represented that if I use this knife can i simply end my life which makes the knife the make focus of the meaning to the play. This scene wasn't my favorite but it was OK.
The second "to be or not to be " speech by Zeffirelli's Hamlet. I thought that the setting in the movie was the perfect place because it was in the catacombs of the castle. It really show the meaning of the speech, what death is really like. the lighting in the movies is sort of dark but there's a light always on him but in one part when he says, "thus conscience makes cowards of us." there's a shadow on him like he's shutting out the world for his weakness to do the act of committing suicide. Then he goes into the light when he realizes what he must do.I also like the way he expresses his emotions unlike the other hamlets in the other movies.
In the Branaugh verison he portrayed Hamlet as being confuse and frustrated. He used a knife to show how much is welling to kill himself. The way Branaugh took out his knife and pointed at himself in the mirror built such a suspense, Hamlet's uncle got scared even though he was on the other side of a two way mirror. I also think that the mirror was a symbol of 2 worlds like life and death.
In the most modern version i thin the Hamlet was more dull and sarcastic. But i like the when he was in the blockbuster and in the aisles the movie categories, to me, foreshadowed up coming scenes. this one wasn't my favorite.
